How do you want Austin to look in the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Now’s your chance to decide. CodeNEXT, the city’s effort to rewrite its land development code, is moving along and there is once again an opportunity for public input. This week, the CodeNEXT team published the first of four written previews, or prescriptions, of the new land development code, outlining how the new code will impact certain sectors of the city.
The first prescription focuses on the natural and built environment.
A few key goals that are addressed in this prescription include:
- Treating water like the precious resource that it is. Austin needs to be more strategic, according to the report, in the the way that it treats rainwater by adopting a more conservation mindset.
- Addressing flooding
- Finding better ways to integrate nature into the city
- Increasing road, sidewalk, and trail connectivity
- Allowing for a diversity of lot sizes and building types, increasing the opportunity for affordability
- Encouraging redevelopment and better use of existing infrastructure
- Reducing sprawl
