Sponsored Post – from the Central Texas Food Bank
Looking to make a difference in the community? Here’s a way you can go the extra mile by rescuing food and delivering it to relief agencies so they can quickly get it to the one in six Central Texans facing food insecurity.
Middle Mile is a joint project of the Central Texas Food Bank, Keep Austin Fed, and Feeding America designed to pick up food from small/medium retailers, restaurants, hotels, farms, caterers, and similar businesses—perfectly good food that might otherwise go to waste—so it can help feed our neighbors in need.
What does a Middle Mile volunteer do?
- After being trained by Keep Austin Fed, you’ll respond to real-time notifications from businesses about food that’s available for pickup.
- Once you accept a donation pickup, you’ll be connected to a nearby food pantry, shelter, or soup kitchen that can accept the food and you’ll be on your way to make your delivery.
- Once the delivery is made, you simply report back that you completed it!
To become a volunteer, you’ll need to complete training and get a Texas food handlers permit, have a reliable personal vehicle (with valid insurance and driver’s license), and be able to lift about 30 pounds.
Becoming a Middle Mile volunteer is great a way to assist those in need while helping the environment by decreasing food waste. Come be part of this collaborative effort!
