What’s a Fix-It Clinic?

Is there a fallen hem in your favorite shirt? Did your blender stop working? Is your child’s toy a little worse for the wear? Bring these items and more to a local Fix-It Clinic to learn how to fix your broken items from skilled volunteer coaches — for free!

While we can’t guarantee your item will be fixed, coaches will guide you through how the item works and what you may need for repair. Attendees are expected to actively participate and stay with their items during the repair process.

Can’t make it to the clinic?

Drop off your broken item at the Ruiz Library Branch (1600 Grove Blvd), December 8-14, and our volunteers will try to fix it for you. Then you can pick it up from the Ruiz Branch, December 17-23. We cannot guarantee that your item will be fixed, and items not picked up by closing time on December 23 will be donated. This program is first-come, first-served, and there are a limited number of drop-off slots available. A signed waiver is required to participate. No bikes or oversized items.

If you plan to drop off an item, you do not need to reserve a ticket on EventBrite.

What should I bring?

Your broken item(s) and a desire to improve your repair skills! You may bring up to two items. Sewing machines and other tools will be available for you to use, but you can also bring your own machines and tools if you prefer. Please bring any replacement part, missing button, fabric patch, matching thread or other material you might need to help you fix your item.

At this Fix-It Clinic, you can learn how to fix almost anything! Including:

  • Clothing
  • Jewelry
  • Accessories
  • Toys
  • Small Appliances
  • Electronics
  • Bikes

Who can attend?

All ages are welcome, but children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fix-It Clinics are a great learning opportunity for children ages 7 and up!

How do I sign up?

Click here! You may reserve up to two tickets based on your broken item and arrival time. One ticket = one item. If you plan on bringing two items, your tickets must be in different time blocks, for example one ticket from 11 a.m. to noon and a second from noon to 1 p.m.

If you are registering for other family members, you may select up to two tickets per participant. Please register tickets under the name of the person who will be working on the item. We will have a list of who has registered at the check-in booth, so no need for you to print off confirmation.

Having a hard time signing up? Email circulareconomy@austintexas.gov for help.

What if the clinic is sold out for the item I want to bring?

If your preferred ticket is sold out, you may still come to the Fix-It Clinic with your item. We will do our best to accommodate you, but we cannot guarantee the availability of coaches. Keep an eye on our official web page for an announcement of the next clinic!

Can I volunteer at the clinic?

We are always looking for individuals with repair skills to become Fix-It Coaches! To sign up as a repair coach for our Clinic, visit our volunteer sign-up platform online and claim a spot.
