More info about Water Forward:

Water Forward is Austin’s 100-year integrated water resource plan to develop and implement diverse and environmentally conscious water management strategies to adapt to growth, drought, and climate change and ensure a sustainable, resilient, equitable, and affordable water future for our community for the next 100 years.

Water Forward was first approved by Council in November 2018. Since that time Austin Water has begun implementation of near-term plan strategies to help address future water supply needs. Did you know that Austin Water has programs that incentivize the collection of rainwater? Collecting rainwater in a barrel or cistern is a great way to ensure your plants are getting the water they need between rain events. Allowing rainwater to infiltrate on your property by using a raingarden (or other methods that “slows the flow”) helps trees get the water they need through a drought.

Join us for a virtual lunch and learn session on November 16th at 12PM, where Christopher Charles from Austin Water’s Conservation Division will discuss the Rainwater Harvesting and the WaterWise Rainscape Programs, from guiding you through the application process to providing insight into commonly asked questions. Help lower your water usage during the ongoing drought by using the water that plants and trees prefer to stay healthy.

I am excited to announce and invite you to our upcoming public safety meeting, which will be held on November 1, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jollyville Fire Department, 9218 Anderson Mill Road. This meeting promises to be enlightening and informative, as representatives from Austin Water and Austin Energy will join us.

With winter fast approaching, it is crucial that we equip ourselves with the necessary knowledge and preparedness to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. The expertise and insights that our guests will share during this meeting will provide us with a wealth of valuable information regarding winter weather preparedness.

Austin Water, committed to providing safe and reliable water services, will enlighten us on safeguarding our water supply during the colder months. They will share tips on preventing frozen pipes, proper insulations, and other essential measures to avoid any potential disruption in our water services.

Similarly, Austin Energy will be present to discuss strategies for winterizing our homes and businesses. Their representatives will shed light on energy conservation techniques, efficient heating practices, and maintaining our electrical systems to ensure an uninterrupted power supply throughout the chilly season.

This meeting will not only provide valuable information but also serve as an opportunity for us to connect and support one another. Your presence and active participation will significantly contribute to the success of this event, fostering a stronger and more resilient community.

Please extend this invitation to your neighbors, friends, and family members who may also benefit from attending. Let’s ensure we are well-prepared for the upcoming winter season.

As space is limited, take a moment to RSVP for this event.

Parking: Please use the spaces behind the fire station on the left-hand side. The fire department will keep the gate open for visitors during this time. However, parking is limited, so please park only in designated spaces. If those spaces are full, you can park in the shopping center next door and take a short walk over.

This virtual meeting will be the last time to offer input on the Landscape Transformation Ordinance effort for newly built single-family residential properties. The project will help Austin Water’s Water Conservation staff meet the initiatives of the Water Forward Plan approved by City Council.

The options moving forward will be:

1. Pressure-regulating requirements for newly built irrigation systems

2. Limitations on how much automatic irrigation can be installed on a property

3. Requirements for Laundry to Landscape connections to be installed on new homes

4. Requiring homebuilders to use a city plant list for their landscapes.

We will discuss required irrigation inspections and enforcement of the options moving forward. The goal is to set up new homeowners for success with landscapes that use less water when supplemental irrigation is needed.

Please join us on August 10th at 6pm for our last virtual meeting.
