\nWhile the technologies used to gather and distribute water in the past may have been less complex than those now in use, the basic principles are the same: water is pulled downhill by gravity, soaks into the soil, evaporates into the air, and can be retained and directed by barriers and conduits. The investigation of water management in urban contexts in the past can help us to understand the challenges those societies dealt with and the solutions they developed. Not only are these solutions sometimes relevant to modern challenges in water management in densely-settled areas, but they also help us understand the evolution of the systems we now have.<\/div>\n
\nThis panel brings together scholars who study human interactions with water resources in urban environments of the past, from the Romans to the Maya to the modern US Southwest. They will explain how their research illuminates past water management practices, and discuss the connection of those practices with social and historical developments in both the Old and the New Worlds.<\/div>","excerpt":"","slug":"resilience-roundtable-histories-of-urban-water-management","image":{"url":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Histories-of-Urban-Water-Management.png","id":51038,"extension":"png","width":450,"height":337,"filesize":177249,"sizes":{"menu-featured-post":{"width":345,"height":198,"mime-type":"image\/png","filesize":89864,"url":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Histories-of-Urban-Water-Management-345x198.png"},"qode-carousel_slider":{"width":400,"height":260,"mime-type":"image\/png","filesize":133803,"url":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Histories-of-Urban-Water-Management-400x260.png"},"latest_post_boxes":{"width":450,"height":303,"mime-type":"image\/png","filesize":162474,"url":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Histories-of-Urban-Water-Management-450x303.png"}}},"all_day":false,"start_date":"2024-01-17 12:00:00","start_date_details":{"year":"2024","month":"01","day":"17","hour":"12","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"end_date":"2024-01-17 13:00:00","end_date_details":{"year":"2024","month":"01","day":"17","hour":"13","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"utc_start_date":"2024-01-17 18:00:00","utc_start_date_details":{"year":"2024","month":"01","day":"17","hour":"18","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"utc_end_date":"2024-01-17 19:00:00","utc_end_date_details":{"year":"2024","month":"01","day":"17","hour":"19","minutes":"00","seconds":"00"},"timezone":"America\/Chicago","timezone_abbr":"CST","cost":"","cost_details":{"currency_symbol":"","currency_position":"prefix","values":[]},"website":"https:\/\/resilienceroundtable5.splashthat.com\/","show_map":true,"show_map_link":true,"hide_from_listings":false,"sticky":false,"featured":false,"categories":[{"name":"Lecture\/Guest Speaker","slug":"lecture-guest-speaker","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":1301,"taxonomy":"tribe_events_cat","description":"","parent":0,"count":541,"filter":"raw","id":1343,"urls":{"self":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/categories\/1343","collection":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/categories"}}],"tags":[{"name":"Climate Change","slug":"climate_change","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":16,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":1447,"filter":"raw","id":18,"urls":{"self":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/tags\/18","collection":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/tags"}},{"name":"Planet Texas 2050","slug":"planet-texas-2050","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":1381,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":17,"filter":"raw","id":1423,"urls":{"self":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/tags\/1423","collection":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/tags"}},{"name":"Water","slug":"water","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":48,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":1004,"filter":"raw","id":73,"urls":{"self":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/tags\/73","collection":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/wp-json\/tribe\/events\/v1\/tags"}}],"venue":{"id":26502,"author":"9432","status":"publish","date":"2016-04-19 13:24:10","date_utc":"2016-04-19 18:24:10","modified":"2016-04-19 13:24:10","modified_utc":"2016-04-19 18:24:10","url":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/venue\/online\/","venue":"Online","slug":"online","show_map":true,"show_map_link":true,"global_id":"theaustincommon.com?id=26502","global_id_lineage":["theaustincommon.com?id=26502"]},"organizer":[{"id":45231,"author":"9432","status":"publish","date":"2020-12-03 13:08:33","date_utc":"2020-12-03 19:08:33","modified":"2020-12-03 13:09:58","modified_utc":"2020-12-03 19:09:58","url":"https:\/\/theaustincommon.com\/organizer\/planet-texas-2050\/","organizer":"Planet Texas 2050","description":"
